2020 Summary

  • I. Festival Schedule

    • Dates: February 2 (SUN) ~ 6 (THU), 2020
    • Location: Around Alpensia Resort, Pyeongchang, Korea
  • II. Participation Opportunities

    • A. Individual Track

      Class for Conductors & Watching the Festival over All.

      The individual participants as well as all participating choir directors have free access to any classes and concerts at any time, so that they can experience around 20 pieces newly, including 3 master’s classes which is specialized in different genre such as Pop-Jazz, Contemporary Classic and Asian Folklore and also the Class for Conductors and the Atelier workshop for the festival project choir.

    • B. Festival Project Choir Track (Non-Competing, Available in Order of Apply)

      Festival Project Choir will focus more on "workshop" where a principal master and a number of singers work together for practicing and performing with an orchestra. Singers of various choirs from all over the world could join as a temporary project choir member to be trained in the skills and techniques of the newly composed pieces for the festival. Day 2: The participating choirs show its own performances at Opening Concert Day 2 – 3: Singers would leave their own choirs temporarily so that they could form a new big choir to practice a newly composed festive work for the festival. Day 3: The singers of the festival project choir will perform the festive work. They might have much more fun at the Grand Concert with the festival orchestra.

    • C. Concert Choir Track (Non-Competing, Special Concert & Bonding w/ the Local Groups)

      The groups who took concert choir track are more like the grasshopper from “the ant and the grasshopper.” They will look every nook and corner in Pyeongchang county and Gangwon-do province. The singers of Concert Choir Track would perform every evening at various venues under the bonding with the local group.

  • III. Competition Regulations

    • A. Competing Rules

      • 1. Open to Non-professional Choirs

        The competition is open to non-professional choirs only. The artistic committee reserves the rights to approve the participation of each choir.

      • 2. Minimum Number of Singers

        Each group must be made up of a minimum of 16 singers to compete, excluding conductor and accompanist.
        The choir that breaking the minimum number of singers will be penalized by 5 points for each singer.

      • 3. Time Limit

        The pure singing time limit for each categories is up to 12 minutes. The singing time excludes time taken by entering/exiting the stage, time between pieces or time incurred by applause.
        If the time limit is exceeded, the jury will give penalty by 5 points for each minute.

      • 4. Compulsory Work

        One a-cappella piece should be performed for each category. The use of any instrument is completely forbidden for the a-cappella piece as compulsory work in the competition.

      • 5. Accompaniment

        For non a-cappella pieces, only a Piano will be equipped at the venues. If there is any other instrument or sound system needed, the choir should prepare by their own expenses under permission of the artistic committee.

      • 6. Jury Board

        The decision of the jury board will not be subject to appeal. The members of artistic committee shall not issue any other written evaluation of the choir performance, except for the point classification.

    • B. Competing Categories

      Choirs may choose 2 categories, maximum, one by the combination of choir and one by the music style they specialized in.

      • 1. By Combination

        • a) Children's Choir (the majority of singers are under 15 years old)

          -The organizer grants an exception for 15% of the total choir members, yet singers may exceed the age limit by a maximum of 3 years of age. However, this must be reported to the organizer in advance.
        • b) Adult Choir

        • c) Senior Choir (the majority of singers are over 55 years old, International Seniors)

          -The organizer grants an exception for 15% of the total choir members, yet singers may exceed the age limit by a maximum of 3 years of age. However, this must be reported to the organizer in advance.
        • d) Disabled Choir

      • 2. By Musical Style / Genre

        • e) Folk & Ethnic -The groups will have to perform Ethnic/Traditional music or pieces arranged from ethnic/traditional music.

          The program must contain, at least:
          • 1) One work from the native country of the group,
          • 2) One Folk / Ethnic work belongs to different continent
        • f) Classic & Sacred

          The groups will have to perform, at least:
          • 1) One work composed before 1750,
          • 2) One work composed between 1751 and 1900
        • g) Contemporary Classical Music

          The groups will have to perform, at least:
          • 1) One work composed between 1901 and 1999,
          • 2) One work composed after 2000
        • h) Popular Music

          The program must contain only spiritual, gospel, pop and jazz music pieces.
    • C. Grand-Prix Competition for Festival Champion

      For the Grand-Prix nominees, the jury board and the members of artistic committee of the festival will discuss to select up to 8 groups. The groups that gained higher scores from the category round of the festival and one or two remarkable winner(s) from the other sister music festival(s) would be considered. The grand-prix nominee will perform any ONE(1) piece from their repertoire at Grand-Prix Competition.
    • D. Prizes

      • 1. Festival Champion

        Grand Prix (Prize Money KRW3,000,000 & Trophy)
      • 2. Category Winners

        • 1st Prize from each Category (Prize Money KRW1,000,000& Trophy)
        • 2nd Prize from each Category (Medal & Certificate)
        • 3rd Prize from each Category (Medal & Certificate)
      • 3. Achieved Choirs

        According to scores the choir gained, medals and certificates would be awarded as written below.
        • Gold medal: All groups obtained scores of 87.50 points and above
        • Silver medal: All groups obtained scores of 75 points and above
        • Bronze medal: All groups obtained scores of 62.50 points and above
        • Diploma: below 62.50 points
      • 4. Special Prize

        The jury board may decide to present special prize(s) to the conductors and the other individual musicians in case of impressive artistic achievement.
  • IV. General Notification

    • A. Number of Singers

      There is no limitation for number of singers to register for the festival.

    • B. Approval of the Participation

      The artistic committee reserves the rights to approve the participation of each group. The organization will inform the approval result within 10 working days after the registration to the applicants.

    • C. Approval of the Programme

      The programmes to be performed at the festival and/or competition must be approved by the artistic committee. The submitted works can’t be changed after being confirmed.

    • D. Copyrights

      The groups must perform works under their own copyrights.

    • E. Recordings of the Activities

      The organizer reserves the rights to record/videotape and also to use of video/audio recordings of the festival activities. The choirs are not allowed to claim any right of performance or image.

    • F. General Understandin

      It is assumed that each choir/individual participating in Pyeongchang Korea World Choral Festival-2020 fully accepts and adheres to the rules and regulations of the Festival.

  • V. Application

    • A. OFFICIAL APPLICATION & THE DEADLINE:

      • Applications can be made through the following web-site until December 31, 2019. http://choralympic.k-choral.com/en
    • B. REGISTRATING MATERIALS:

      The application should include the following documents:
      • 1. Short CV of the choir and conductor,
      • 2. One photos in high resolution of the choir and conductor,
      • 3. Two recent recording of the choir,
      • 4. One PDF copy of each selected pieces for the festival performance(s)
      • Once the choir is selected, the choir will send 5 copies of the chosen compositions (photocopies allowed only with publisher’s written approval – or composer’s written approval for manuscripts). All five copies should be sent by post to the official address of the organizer. The scores to be performed will remain in the archive of the festival and will not be returned back.
    • C. REGISTRATION FEE PER CHOIR: US$

      • The registration fee should be paid upon official submission of application form. Registration fee is non-refundable in any case of cancellation of the application and/or participation.
  • VI. Festival Package Per Participants

    One of the Festival Package per participants listed below is mandatorily required.

    • Festival Pass: US$180, for domestic participant only

      • - free pass to all the festival venues for classes and concerts,
      • - festival souvenir booklets and hard-copy handouts
    • Package A: US$490

      • - all items in Festival PASS,
      • - airport transfers (ICN or Seoul ↔ Pyeongchang),
      • - festival lunches, dinners & festival transportation,
      • - hotel accommodation w/ breakfast (★★★★☆, 4 nights-Family Room),
      • - 1/2 day Snow Playing, 1/2 day Country-Side or Seoul-City tour & guide
    • Package B: US$650

      • - all items in PACKAGE A,
      • - hotel accommodation up-grade (to ★★★★★, 4 nights-Twin Sharing)
      • - single room surcharge: US$90/night
